World War II dates back to 1939, when Hitler invades Poland on September 1st. After this incident Great Britain and France declared war on Germany. From that moment on, World War II would be considered the bloodiest and most destructive war of all wars. After France and Great Britain declare war on Germany, Japanese planes bombed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941. The next day, the U.S. Congress declared war, taking the U.S. into World War II.
World War II was a total war, a war in which countries devoted all their profits, weapons, and men to this war, to prove their strength and power. Through out the war there were many key points which really effected the war.
In 1940 Nazi Germany is unsuccessful with moving into Britain Shifting Hitlers focus on Southeastern Europe. In 1941, Hitler Betrays his non-aggression pact he had signed with Stalin and begins on Operation Barbarossa. After this Betrayal The Soviet Union allies themselves with the U.S. Great Britain, and France, (The Allies). Hitlers next move was invading The Soviet Union. Their target? Stalingrad. German soldiers attempted their invasion on 1942 but were unsuccessful. Also in 1942 before the Battle of Stalingrad was the Battle of Midway which was fought in the pacific. This was a Japanese attack on an American military base on the island of Midway, despite being unprepared for the attack on Pearl Harbor the Americans were prepared for this battle. By hiding in the horizon and allowing the Japanese troops the first move, the Americans won a decisive victory.
In 1943 while the German troops were retreating the Battle of Stalingrad in Russia after an embarrassing defeat, the allies were planning their next move. Stalin persistently told the British and Americans to attack occupied France immediately, however Roosevelt and Churchill instead made plans to attack Italy. On July 10, 1943 the US and British troops invaded Sicily an island off the coast of Italy which was occupied of course by Italian and German troops. However by August, the Americans and British had full control Sicily. This chain reacted not only the surrender of Italy on September 3rd, but the fall of both Fascism in Italy and Mussolini’s removal from power. Afterwards Mussolini was also sentenced to prison but shot before he could fulfill it. Italian marshal Pietro Badoglio was put into power in Mussolini's place form a new government. The Allies next move was the move that Stalin had encouraged them to for so long, an attack on the German troops within France. In May 1944 was the Normandy invasion (Operation Overlord/ the D-Day Invasion) lead by American General Dwight Eisenhower, this called for thousands of artillery and an enormous amount of infantry troops. The Germans were ready for the attack and simply machine gunned soldiers as they fought their way on to the beach. They held their ground for a month, however with the help of 1 million additional troops on July 25 the allies broke the Germans wall of defense, by September France would be liberated, along with Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands.
By this time Hitler knew that his regime was doomed however in the "Battle of the Bulge" in December Hitler attempted to push the allied troops back with a surprise attack, this ultimately failed. As the allied troops crossed the Rhine River into Germany in march 1945, Soviet troops came from the east and cornered Berlin. In light of these events Hitler committed suicide and the German government surrender to both the allies and the Soviet union in may. The war in Europe was over however the war in Japan was still in motion. Before focusing on Japan, American marines captured small islands off the coast of Japan such as Iwo Jima and Okinawa, while this was happening newly appointed President Truman was deciding whether or not to use the Atomic bomb on Japan. The bomb would be sure to end the war quickly but at the cost of millions of lives. Truman warned the Japanese that if they did not surrender they would see a “rain of ruin from the air” and they did not heed his warning. as a result two atomic bombs were dropped on japan, one on Hiroshima on august 6th and one on Nagasaki on August 9th and in September the Japanese surrendered, V-J Day. Following the end of the war was the Nuremberg Trials which convicted 22 Nazi officials for crimes against humanity, the demilitarization of Japan, and the slow healing of countries devastated by war.
